Report: Phillies Interested in Mariners Closer Diaz, Shortstop Segura

By Matt Rappa, Sports Talk Philly editor

The black-and-white narrative of Manny Machado and Bryce Harper being the main blockbuster moves the Philadelphia Phillies could possibly make this offseason, actually has a lot more color. In fact, the club has reported interest in two Seattle Mariners All-Stars, according to MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi — shortstop Jean Segura and closer Edwin Diaz.

Per Morosi on Tuesday, the Phillies, along with the Atlanta Braves, have interest in Diaz, while the Phillies and New York Yankees have interest in Segura — "known for his bat control."

Diaz, 24, led all of baseball this past season in games finished (65) and saves (57), blowing only four opportunities out of 61 overall save situations. Diaz, a three-year veteran, earned his first All-Star nod in 2018, while finishing eighth in the American League Cy Young Award race, and 18th for American League Most Valuable Player. Diaz earned American League Reliever of the Year honors for 2018 thanks to his 1.96 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 124/17 K/BB ratio over 73 1/3 innings.

Segura, 28, is a seven-year veteran, two-time All-Star and one-time top 15-finisher for the National League Most Valuable Player Award. The Dominican Republic native has a career .287/.327/.404 slash line — with 154 doubles, 36 triples, 64 home runs, 316 RBI, 171 stolen bases and just 58 caught steals. Segura led the American League in singles (136) this past season.

Diaz is not arbitration eligible until 2020, while Segura is under team control through 2023, with an annual salary no higher than $17 million.

Morosi noted that Segura could help a Phillies lineup that finished with the third-most strikeouts: 1,520. Segura struck out in only 69 of his 632 plate appearances in 2018 (10.9 percent), although he has a no-trade clause:

The Yankees also asked Dipoto about shortstop Jean Segura, who is available for the right price. The Phillies also have interest in Segura, who is known for his bat control and could help a Philadelphia lineup that finished third in the Majors with 1,520 strikeouts this year.

As first reported by MLB Network insider Ken Rosenthal, the Mariners have spoken with the Padres about a trade that would send Segura and Mike Leake to San Diego in exchange for Wil Myers.

Perhaps most intriguingly, the Mariners haven't ruled out the possibility of trading Edwin Diaz. The Phillies and Braves are among the teams interested in Diaz coming off his 57-save season.

On Friday, MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince wrote of five blockbuster trades "worth making." A Phillies-Cleveland Indians-Mariners blockbuster was featured at the top of the list, with the Phillies acquiring Segura and two Indians: RHP Corey Kluber and catcher Yan Gomes. To acquire the three players, Castrovince has the Phillies dealing Roman Quinn and Adonis Medina to the Indians, along with J.P. Crawford, Sixto Sanchez and Adam Haseley to the Mariners.

Along with Diaz, the Phillies have recently been linked to showing interest in fellow closer, Craig Kimbrel. The offseason has just begin, and it is bound to be a wild ride for the Phillies.
