RealGM.com is reporting that Philadelphia Sixers second round pick Richaun Holmes fractured his elbow in the finale of the Utah Summer League. According to RealGM.com, Holmes faces a six to eight week recovery time period.
Holmes presumably injured his elbow after attempting to block a layup by Wesley Saunder in the Sixers 84-78 loss to the Utah Jazz Thursday night. After landing awkwardly on his elbow, he went to the bench during the timeout and never returned.
"He banged his funny bone," said assistant coach Billy Lange. "We are going to get an X-ray on it just as a precautionary thing, Beyond that I don't know much."
The injury apparently turned out much worse than initially thought for the 37th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Holmes averaged 9.6 points, 5 rebounds, and 1 steal in three games of summer league play. He brought energy and solid defense to the team, and even flashed a little three point range at times.
Jake Fischer had the following update on Holmes today:
I'm told Richaun Holmes is in good spirits. Sam Hinkie called to reassure the forward he'll rehab at PCOM and get ready for training camp.

While the setback will likely stunt Holmes growth, he should still make the roster. After drafting Holmes in the second round, Hinkie said that most players drafted in the 30s of the NBA Draft make the team. So expect to see Holmes again at some point this year.
