With the one deal involving the Sixers at the trade deadline voided, apparently Sam Hinkie and company attempted to strike a deal with the Hawks. According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Sixers offered multiple packages to the Hawks and in return, Philadelphia would receive young point guard Dennis Schroder. Atlanta had some reservations about a deal, that reportedly involved a 2016 first round pick, including the unknown of resigning Ish Smith.
The team offered packages that included shooting guard Nik Stauskas, point guard Ish Smith, a player with an expiring guaranteed contract and a 2016 first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for point guard Dennis Schroder, according to multiple league sources.
Former Sixer JaKarr Sampson was said to be player with the expiring contract in the deal.
The uncertainty surrounding the re-signing of Smith this summer was a holdup for the Hawks, according to one of the sources. The point guard, whose stock rose this season, is expected to have plenty of suitors when he becomes a free agent this summer.
Though Smith is mentioned in the deal, Bobby Marks of Yahoo! Sports and The Vertical podcast pointed out that the veteran point guard was ineligible to be traded.
Because Ish Smith was acquired from New Orleans on Dec. 24 he is ineligible to be aggregated in any trade. There is a two-month waiting period for players obtained in trades. Smith, however, can be traded alone.
Meanwhile, Pompey goes on to mention that his sources indicate that the Sixers and Hawks could very well revisit a trade come draft night on June 23rd. This season for the Atlanta as their backup point guard, the 22-year-old out of Germany is averaging 11.2 points and 4.7 assists in 21 minutes spanning 56 games.
Schroder is signed through the end of next season and the Hawks have the ability to submit a qualifying offer for $3.8 million in 2017-18. One of Pompey's sources said that the Sixers are prepared to sign him a maximum-salary deal, which would be $21.6 million per season.
The pick that would have gone to the Hawks in the trade was not the Sixers, but either the Lakers (top-3 protected), Heat (top-10 protected) or Thunder (top-15 protected) selections that Philadelphia owns, according to Pompey.
