The Philadelphia 76ers have decided to part ways with their longest tenured "process soldier" in guard Hollis Thompson on Wednesday evening. The 25-year-old out of Georgetown was in the final year of a four-year contract and his salary for the season would have become fully guaranteed on January 10.

Thompson signed with the Sixers in September 2013 and was a member of the Sixers on the first game of Sam Hinkie's rebuilding process that October. After playing nearly 28 minutes per game last season though, Thompson was averaging just over 18 minutes in 31 games this season, despite adding a three-point threat to the game. His 38.931 percent shooting percentage from beyond the arc is good for sixth in Philadelphia 76ers history. Thompson finishes his Sixers career with averages of 7.9 points and 3.1 rebounds across 256 games.
With Thompson headed out, there could be more opportunity for Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot to get more playing time. Luwawu, selected by the Sixers with the 24th overall pick in 2016, has seen an increase in action over the last three games and he's shown some nice progress, especially on the defensive end of the ball. He played 15 minutes against Utah, 11 in Denver and 22 on Tuesday night against Minnesota.
The departure of Thompson also gives the Sixers a chance to give some of their D-League talent a look with 10-day contracts. NBA teams can begin signing players to 10-day deals on Thursday, January 4. Sean Long and Dionte Christmas are leading the Sevens in scoring with 17.8 and 17.4 points per game, respectively. Cat Barber is averaging 15.1 points.
