The Phillies need help. Specifically, the Phillies lineup could use some offensive help. General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. promised big changes. Does that mean that the Phillies could be in on the baseball's biggest free agent of the year Robinson Cano? Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com believes that the Phillies could be one of the teams who pursue Cano this offseason.
In Marchand's blog earlier today, he ranked the Phillies as the third most-likely destination for Cano:
Wait, they just signed Chase Utley. Yes, but Ruben Amaro Jr. does creative things, an official noted. So the Phillies, with some new cable money about to roll in, could try to bring in Cano and push Utley to third.
Marchand notes that the Texas Rangers tried to trade for Cano during the season and that they might be his top suitor.
I am not sure that third base would be the landing spot for Utley. But, Utley could play outfield for a while. Maybe Cano would be willing to change positions. That is a lot to speculate about right now. Do the Phillies have the money to sign Cano if they want? Yes. Will it be a lot of money? Yes. I would not rule the Phillies out, but it would be a longshot.
h/t to @ColinHumphreys for bringing this to my attention.
