Report: Wentz not expected to play vs. Rams, may miss rest of season

The Philadelphia Eagles playoff hopes are all but over and the team might be moving forward this season without their primary signal caller. At Doug Pederson's press conference on Wednesday morning, he mentioned that Carson Wentz was dealing with some back soreness and that he was not going to practice. When asked if he was a go for Sunday's game against the Rams, Doug said that they will focus on today and see where he is as the week progresses.

Shortly after Pederson left the podium, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport took to Twitter, reporting that Wentz is unlikely to play on Sunday and could be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

It's clear that Wentz hasn't really been himself this season, coming off surgery to repair a torn ACL and LCL suffered last season in Los Angeles. Although Wentz is still completing 69.6 percent of his passes for 21 touchdowns, he's been missing on passes he would have made a year ago while also holding on to the ball for too long, resulting in nine fumbles. Wentz's injury history now extends to his back in addition to the ligament tears he suffered last season and the rib fracture from two years ago.

At this point, with back soreness and the team's playoff chances very slim, it might make sense to sit him and get him healthy for next season. It would seem likely that Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles would get the call, but it may also make sense to give Nate Sudfeld a look since he becomes a restricted free agent at season's end.
