For the third straight game, a Brayden Schenn goal proved to be the difference. Fitting that this time it was for the Flyers 10th win in a row.
The Flyers win streak hit 10 in Colorado as they claimed a 4-3 win on Wednesday night over the Avalanche.
Both teams got off to a slow start with chances, but eventually settled into a good first period. The Flyers held the advantage in shots, 12-5, after 20 minutes of scoreless hockey.
The scoring picked up in the second with the Flyers getting on the board first.
Claude Giroux made a nice centering pass to Michael Del Zotto. Del Zotto was stopped on the first shot, but stayed with the play and put home the rebound for his fourth of the season at 4:01.
Colorado answered back midway through the second. Off a face-off, Rene Bourque threw a turnaround shot on goal and beat Steve Mason to tie the game at one.
Just over four minutes later, the Flyers were pinned in their own zone and the consistent pressure helped give the Avalanche the lead. After several solid saves by Mason, a rebound went right to Matt Duchene, who scored his 11th of the season.
Just 23 seconds later, Radko Gudas led Wayne Simmonds on a breakaway and he scored his 16th of the season to tie the game.
Moments later, the Flyers thought they had the lead when a Shayne Gostisbehere shot was deflected in by Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. But the Avalanche argued a high stick and after review, the goal was disallowed, keeping the score tied through two periods of play.
The Flyers didn't let the disallowed goal phase them and took the lead again early in the third. A turnover by Colorado sent a loose puck to the slot and Roman Lyubimov fired a hard shot past Calvin Pickard to put the Flyers in front at 3:30.
Less than two minutes later, the Flyers padded the lead. Schenn remained hot as he raced up the wing and cut toward the net, tucking home a shot past Pickard to make it 4-2.
The Avalanche tried to apply pressure and started to later in the period. That led to a goal in the final five minutes. A shot chance by Mikko Rantanen was blocked but the rebound went right to the stick of Duchene, who had another easy tap-in goal, his second of the game.
The Avalanche kept the pressure on in the final minutes and a furious rally at the end came close to tying the game. But the Flyers held on for the win, getting their 10th straight win, their longest streak since 1985.
Mason made 26 saves in the win while Pickard stopped 21 shots.
Taylor Leier picked up the secondary assist on Schenn's game-winning goal for his first NHL point.
The Flyers return to the ice again on Saturday, making a bid for No. 11, as they face the Dallas Stars to wrap up a three-game road trip. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m.
