A bunch of Phillies news today.
Catcher Cameron Rupp is headed to St. Louis to fill in for the sore Wil Nieves, the Phillies announced today. Nieves pulled a quad muscle after hitting his second double on Wednesday afternoon. Nieves is not heading to the disabled list, however. Rupp will take outfielder Aaron Altherr's spot on the roster, who is currently occupying Tony Gwynn Jr.'s spot while he tends to the death of his father.
Third baseman Cody Asche was rehabbing at AAA Lehigh Valley. In 13 at bats, Asche had nine hits, including three home runs. Asche is not in the Iron Pigs lineup today, leading to speculation he too could be heading to St. Louis to join the big club. Asche's return could mean that shortstop Ronny Cedeño could be designated for assignment. Jim Salisbury of CSN Philly thinks he sees him taking batting practice in St. Louis, but he's not sure.
Outfielder John Mayberry Jr. may be drawing some trade interest. According to CSNPhilly's Jim Salisbury, both the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are interested in the Phillies extra man. The Phillies had trouble moving Mayberry during Spring Training, but Mayberry's hot play of late has some teams interested.
Pitcher Jonathan Pettibone went under the knife. Pettibone had right shoulder surgery. The surgery will correct a torn labrum. This means that the Phillies will not see Pettibone at all until Spring Training.
