Rupp’s three-run blast lifts Phillies over Braves, secures ninth series victory of season

Final: Phillies 12, Braves 2

WP: Aaron Nola (2-1, 3.38 ERA) LP: Matt Wisler (5-2, 4.44 ERA)

Philadelphia, PA – Trailing by one run in the bottom of the fourth inning with two outs and two runners on, catcher Cameron Rupp blasted his second-career home run. The Phillies never looked back from there, as they went on to score 12 runs tonight on 15 hits. This gave 22-year-old rookie Aaron Nola his second victory in just his third career start on the mound.

Tonight's victory gave the Phillies their fourth series victory and 12th win overall since the All-Star break. As noted in the broadcast, this is the franchise's best stretch after the Mid-Summer Classic since 1955.

The Phillies are now 9-21-4 in 34 total series. Tomorrow afternoon in the series finale, they will look for their fourth sweep of the season.

The very first batter of tonight's game, right fielder Nick Markakis, hit a solo shot off Nola to give Atlanta an early advantage. This was Nola's fourth surrendered home run of the season. Three batters later, after first baseman Freddie Freeman doubled to right center field, catcher A.J. Pierzynski hit a RBI-single to put the Braves on top, 2-0.

Philadelphia cut their deficit in half in the bottom of the first. With second baseman Cesar Hernandez on third, rookie third baseman Maikel Franco hit a sacrifice fly-RBI to left field.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Phillies scored four runs to take a 5-2 lead. Franco began the frame with his 18th double of the season. He scored during the next at-bat, running through the stop sign, as first baseman Ryan Howard singled to right center field. This was Howard's 60th run-batted-in, the ninth time done so in a season for the 2006 National League Most Valuable Player's career.

Later in the inning, with runners on first and second and two outs, catcher Cameron Rupp hit a three-run home run to deep center field, the second of his career.

Aaron Nola was pulled after five innings on the mound tonight. The 22-year-old right hander gave up just two runs on five hits, and struck out three opposing batters. 61 of Nola's 88 pitches were thrown for strikes, and 10 of his 15 recorded outs were groundouts.

In the bottom of the fifth, center fielder Odubel Herrera hit a second-deck blast to right field, his first home run since July 6.  Howard later followed with his 21st double of the season, and just got his hand in at home plate to score off of a Domonic Brown single. This gave the Phillies a 7-2 advantage.

Five runs were added by the Phillies in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by shortstop Freddy Galvis' three-run blast to right field to give his team a commanding ten-run lead. The other runs came home earlier in the inning off of a RBI-double from Franco, and a fielder's choice off the bat of Brown.

The Phillies' bullpen combined for four scoreless innings in relief of Nola tonight. They allowed just one hit, and struck out three batters. Right hander Dalier Hinojosa recorded a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning in his second career relief appearance in red pinstripes.
