Despite the Eagles trading for the second overall pick, clearly to draft a quarterback, and reports that he was mad about the news of the deal, quarterback Sam Bradford will not request a trade according to a report from Yahoo Sports.
Bradford is expected to be the Eagles starting quarterback in 2016 regardless of the pick. Doug Pederson and Howie Roseman have spoken highly of Bradford and are looking to him to be a leader on and off the field next season.
There has been speculation, fueled by reports of Bradford's anger with the situation, that a trade request would be on the horizon for the Eagles and the quarterback. Bradford played in 14 games with the Eagles in 2015, throwing for 3,725 yards, 19 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Bradford re-signed with the Eagles earlier this offseason on a two-year, $36 million deal.
The Eagles also added Chase Daniel at quarterback on a three-year, $21 million deal. If the Eagles add another quarterback, like Carson Wentz or Jared Goff, the amount of guaranteed money going into the quarterback position next season would be approaching $60 million.
Bradford's stance is much more about proving to the Eagles that he is the quarterback of the future, rather than the Eagles desire to draft a quarterback and mold him to a new system and coaching staff.
That hasn't stopped the Eagles nonetheless, who have made several trades to put themselves in this rare position, as Howie Roseman put it, to draft a potential franchise cornerstone.
"We're going to invest in quarterbacks," Roseman said. "If you commit that you're going to invest in quarterbacks, sometimes you have to put your money where your mouth is."
The Eagles are preparing to make such an investment on Thursday. Whatever else comes from this for Bradford, Roseman, Pederson and company remains to be seen.
