Sanheim’s OT Winner Sends Flyers to 6th Straight Win
By Kevin Durso, Sports Talk Philly editor
With the game tied late in the third, it was an all too familiar scenario for the Flyers in Boston. There has been plenty of heartbreak in years past when the Flyers make the trip to Boston. This time, the roles were reversed.
A third-period power-play goal got the game tied and Travis Sanheim scored on a power play in overtime to give the Flyers a 3-2 win over the Bruins on Thursday night.
The Bruins got an early power play and wasted little time taking advantage. Moments after David Pastrnak missed a wide open net, Torey Krug fed him for a one-timer and he didn't miss, scoring his 29th goal of the season to make it 1-0 just 3:05 into the game.
Late in the period, the Flyers got the equalizer. Jake Voracek led Claude Giroux with a perfect pass and Giroux beat Tuukka Rask on the glove side to tie the game at one with 44 seconds left in the period.
The Bruins outshot the Flyers, 10-8, in the first period.
The Flyers outshot the Bruins in the second period, 17-7, controlling most of the period, but it was the Bruins who scored the only goal of the period.
It was Pastrnak again, getting a deflection of a Patrice Bergeron shot and having it bounce behind Carter Hart and in.
The Flyers got a huge chance to tie the game in the third when Scott Laughton got a breakaway and was hauled down, resulting in a penalty shot. Laughton was stopped by Rask on the attempt.
Shortly after, the Flyers drew a penalty on Boston and got their first power play of the game. Oskar Lindblom got the game-tying goal, re-directing a chance from Voracek through Rask and in with 9:24 to play.
The Flyers kept the pressure on for the next few minutes before the Bruins started to push in the final four minutes of the third. They hit the post, Hart made several difficult saves and the Flyers got the benefit of some bounces with Danton Heinen losing control of the puck with a wide open net in front of him.
In the overtime, the Flyers got another power play as Travis Konecny was tripped up by Brad Marchand. With just seconds remaining in the 4-on-3 power play, Sanheim held control and stepped into a wrist shot that was perfectly placed over the shoulder of Rask to complete the come-from-behind win.
Hart made 23 saves in the win for the Flyers. Rask stopped 38 shots in the defeat.
The Flyers were 2-for-2 on the power play. The Bruins also scored on their only power play of the game. Sanheim and Voracek were the only players with two points in the game. Voracek had a pair of assists and Sanheim had a goal and an assist, both on the power play.
The Flyers return home for the first of five straight home games when they face the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
