There was no trade for Jose Bautista today. Dom Brown is still a Phillie. At least for now.
I'm perfectly fine with this. Bautista is in his 30s, and has had health issues cut short the last two years. To trade Dom Brown, plus more, as Howard Eskin said, for a player who is older, more expensive, at least as injury prone, and having to give up more, made no sense. Dom Brown is our best trade chip, a young, controllable all-star. Why do this?
It is one thing to trade Brown for a David Price or Giancarlo Stanton, though I'd argue against that too on some levels. In their cases, you get a young, even more established star. While I think it's a bad idea, I could swallow that. Who wouldn't want one of those guys in Philly?
I have a very different take on Brown though than the "trade him" crowd. There are two things I would do with Brown, of which you can only really pick one:
- Trade Dom for a package of high level prospects who are near, or are, big league ready. I would think at least three players who will play for you fast should be in that package.
- Keep Dom Brown.
