Philadelphia 76ers Olympians Dario Saric and Sergio Rodriguez are back in action on Monday after a weekend that saw Croatia get defeated and Spain win their second straight. With both Croatia and Spain at 2-2, Group B games on Monday will determine seedings and pairings for the upcoming quarterfinal knockout phase set to begin on Tuesday in Rio.
On Saturday, Dario Saric and Croatia were upset by Nigeria, who came in to the game without a win in Olympic compeition. After leading 28-21 after a quarter, Croatia was outscored 22-11 in the second quarter, putting them at a 43-39 deficit at halftime thanks to Nigeria's consistent three-point shooting. The third quarter would be a tough one for Saric, who was charged with two personal fouls in less than a minute after already having two, forcing Croatia coach Aleksander Petrovic to take him off of the floor. Croatia trailed by 14 into the final quarter and lost, 90-76. Saric finished with just seven points on 2-for-5 shooting. He hit one of his three shots from beyond the arc while also grabbing six rebounds in 27 minutes of play. In four Olympic games, Saric is averaging 11.5 points and 7.5 rebounds. Nigeria hit 17 three-pointers while Croatia made just six.
Meanwhile Sergio Rodriguez and Spain tallied their second consecutive win, putting them in a third place tie with Croatia in Group B heading into Monday's action. Spain trounced previously unbeaten Lithuania, 109-59. Led by Pau Gasol, Spain is looking more like the No. 2 ranked team than when they were 0-2. Gasol is averaging 19.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while Rodriguez is contributing 7.8 points and a team-high 4.5 assists despite coming off the bench, backing up Ricky Rubio.
Both Spain and Croatia play on Monday night to decide who will move on to the quarterfinals. Spain will match up with Argentina at 6:00 p.m. while Croatia will take on Lithuania at 9:00 p.m. Head-to-head results will determine which country moves on if there are ties in records.
Argentina and Lithuania are atop Group B with 3-1 records, Spain and Croatia are at 2-2 while Brazil and Nigeria are each 1-3. In Group A, the United States (5-0), Australia (4-1), France (3-2), and Serbia (2-3) have clinched spots in the next round, which will begin on Tuesday.
