The comeback kids did it again. Facing a late deficit with time not on their side, Brayden Schenn played hero.
Schenn, who had already scored once in the game, picked up the tying goal on the power play with 3:48 to play. He scored another power-play goal with 2:15 left to complete a hat trick and another comeback, as the Flyers brought their winning streak to eight straight games with a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars on Saturday afternoon at Wells Fargo Center.
Both teams opened the game with some early sustained pressure. When Dallas got some extended possession time in the Flyers zone, they capitalized.
As the Flyers struggled to gain control for a clear, the Stars cycled the puck to the front of the net where Devin Shore was able to put a shot past Steve Mason to give Dallas the lead.
The Flyers killed off a penalty and then headed to the power play seconds later with just over five minutes to play in the first. With seven seconds left on the power play, another Dallas penalty put the Flyers on a two-man advantage.
The Stars got one player out of the box as the Flyers continued to apply pressure on the power play and they eventually scored as a shot by Jake Voracek was deflected in by Schenn.
The first period ended in a 1-1 tie with the Stars holding the shots advantage, 10-7.
A tight-checking second period featured no scoring and limited shot opportunities. The Stars outshot the Flyers, 7-5, in the period.
The only noteworthy moment of the second period was a fight between Schenn and Stephen Johns. Johns knocked Travis Konecny down near the boards awkwardly and Schenn came to his aid.
It was another hard-fought period in the third and penalties really dictated the way the period would progress. The Flyers were forced to kill a penalty with under 12 minutes to play. Right after the penalty expired, the Stars took advantage of the Flyers being all out of sorts.
A loose puck made its way across to Shore who put a shot on goal that Mason stopped with his stick, but Shore rammed home the rebound to put Dallas on top.
The Flyers would get their chance though, going to the power play with 4:54 to play. They wasted little time in tying it up.
On a very similar play to the first goal, Schenn was in the slot for a tip-in goal off a Voracek set-up and with 3:48 remaining, the game was tied up again.
Just 51 seconds later, Dallas took another penalty. The Flyers needed 42 seconds to take the lead again.
It was Schenn for a third time, knocking in a rebound off a blocked shot for Voracek to put the Flyers ahead with 2:15 to play.
Just over a minute later, with Kari Lehtonen pulled, Voracek scored into an empty net to seal the win.
Mason picked up his seventh straight win, making 21 saves. Lehtonen stopped 18 of 21 shots faced. Voracek also had a four-point game with the empty-net tally and three assists.
The Flyers have a quick turnaround again, heading to Detroit to face the Red Wings on Sunday afternoon at 5 p.m.
