Timing is everything. The September issue of the Phillies program featured a John McDonald feature about… having finally unpacked his bags. McDonald has had a well-traveled year in 2013. McDonald began Spring Training with the Arizona Diamondbacks, who during Spring Training traded McDonald to the Pittsburgh Pirates. After playing just 16 games with the Pirates, McDonald was traded to the Cleveland Indians. Then, what seemed like out of nowhere he was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies on June 27.
Four organizations in one season. But, because he did not play a season game for the Diamondbacks, he would not be considered one of the 13 players who played for four teams in one season. That was, until the August 31 trade deadline when the Phillies shipped McDonald up to Boston. McDonald has not appeared in a game yet, but when he does he will be the 14th player in baseball history to play for four teams in one season.
Casper Wells has been part of five organizations this season: the Seattle Mariners, the Toronto Blue Jays, Oakland Athletics, and the Chicago White Sox, before finally joining the Phillies. He did not appear in games for the Mariners or Blue Jays, so he will not count.
