Seven Phillies featured on Baseball America’s Top 100 Prospects
By Nick Mandarano, SportsTalkPhilly staff writer
The Phillies boast seven of their prospects on BaseballAmerica’s newly released 2017 Midseason Top 100 Prospects list, including two new faces in Scott Kingery and Adam Haseley. Three of their players from the most recent May 11th edition of the list have fallen, but both Sixto Sanchez and Rhys Hoskins have climbed the ranks.
Mickey Moniak, OF
Rank: 46 (-33)
Drafted by the Phillies with the first overall pick of the 2016 Amateur Draft, Monica finished his first season of professional baseball by hitting .284 and slugging .409 in the Gulf Coast League. In 2017, he’s played 77 games in A-Lakewood slashing .268/.318/.383 with three home runs, 29 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 12 attempts at age 19.
Sixto Sanchez, RHP
Rank: 47 (+14)
Sanchez ranked 80th on BaseballAmerica’s list prior to the 2017 season and began the season in A at just 18 years old. He’s currently carrying a 3-3 record in 10 starts with a 3.04 ERA, but his 0.854 WHIP and 10.00 K/BB are what’s set him apart. His WHIP would rank higher than all but one qualifying pitcher in the South Atlantic League. Baseball Prospectus recently labeled Sanchez as "the world's most interesting pitching prospect."
Scott Kingery, 2B
Rank: 52 (—)
Promoted from Reading to Lehigh Valley on June 26, Kingery has been a center of optimism for Phillies fans. Since his promotion to AA, he’s hit .311 and slugged .622 with four home runs in 11 games. It's not just his offense though that has Phillies fans anxious to see him at Citizens Bank Park as his defense also comes in at a plus. A "rival scout" recently compared Kingery to the Red Sox's Dustin Pedroia, a former Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player.
Rhys Hoskins, 1B
Rank: 69 (+19)
In 2016, Hoskins homered 38 times and drove in 116 runs for Reading in 135 games. So far in 2017, he’s on a similar pace with 20 homers and 66 RBI’s in 87 games at Lehigh Valley, while hitting .292.
Jorge Alfaro, C
Rank: 81 (-49)
With just a .256 average, six home runs and 38 RBI’s at Lehigh Valley, Alfaro’s struggled lately. In BaseballAmerica’s last edition of this list on May 11, he was ranked 32nd with a .333 batting average. Defensively, he’s caught just 13 of 41 base stealers (31.7%).
J.P. Crawford, SS
Rank: 92 (-73)
Crawford has been perhaps the most somber prospect for fans in 2017. Ranked 6th in all of baseball in BaseballAmerica’s Pre-2016 list, to say the 22-year-old former first round pick has had a disappointing season would be an understatement. His .215 batting average, among other struggles, have had scouts wondering if Crawford will ever be anything more than a serviceable player at the Major League level.
Adam Haseley, OF
Rank: 98 (—)
Drafted 8th overall this past June from the University of Virginia, Haseley has excelled in his 10 professional games thus far. He’s slashing .474/.565/.605 with seven walks to his eight strikeouts in 46 plate appearances and appears on BaseballAmerica’s top prospect list immediately.
