Seven-run 3rd inning dooms Phillies

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Phillies (15-29) came into tonight's game hoping to fight back against the hot-hitting Colorado Rockies (31-17). The Phils didn't put up much of a fight. Through the first three games of the four game series, the Phillies have been outscored 23-5. Phillies starter Jeremy Hellickson was beat up by the Rockies, allowing seven runs to score in the third inning. That was more than enough to take the wind out of the Phillies' sails. Hellickson was finished after five innings, and Adam Morgan was excellent in his three scoreless innings of relief.

The offense did nothing to support Hellickson or the relievers. The only hit off of Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood was a single by Andrew Knapp. The Phillies did manage to get two runs thanks to a home-run by Michael Saunders in the eighth inning, but that was the lone bright spot on the offensive front. The Phils struck out 12 times today against Rockies pitching, and that isn't acceptable.

Tonight's loss is the eighth consecutive series loss by the Phillies. The team is 4-20 in their last 24 games and currently have the fewest wins in MLB. Tomorrow's afternoon game marks the end of the Rockies series and one can only hope that the Phils can avoid being swept.

The Rockies started the game's scoring in the third. Trevor Story led off the inning with a double into the left field corner. Catcher Tony Wolters followed with a walk to put runners on first and second for pitcher Tyler Chatwood. He moved the runners over to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. Known Phillie-killer Charlie Blackmon knocked in both runners on a single to center to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead. DJ LeMahieu followed with a single to put runners on first and second with one out. Nolan Arenado singled to right field to score Blackmon and move LeMahieu up to third. Carlos Gonzalez followed with a line drive over the right field wall to double the Rockies' lead. The Rockies weren't done yet. Ian Desmond tripled to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Geraldo Parra. Phillies pitcher Jeremy Hellickson was able to get the final out, but the damage was already done. Seven runs were put on the board and Hellickson's ERA went up by a whole point.

The Phillies' bats were silent until the Rockies' starting pitcher exited after seven scoreless innings. Catcher Andrew Knapp led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk. Michael Saunders followed with a home-run to right-center field to put the Phils on the board. After a strike-out by pinch hitter Ty Kelly, second baseman Cesar Hernandez doubled into the left-center field gap. The Rockies decided to make a pitching change, bringing in righty reliever Adam Ottavino. Ottavino's first pitch hit Freddy Galvis to put runners on first and second for Aaron Altherr. He struck out for the second out of the inning. Tommy Joseph flied out to end the inning. Ultimately, it was too little too late.
