In Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg's postgame press conference after the Phillies' 5-2 loss to the Atlanta Braves, Sandberg unveiled something new. Severino Gonzalez, right-handed starter and Phillies prospect, will make his Major League debut on Tuesday for the Phillies against the St. Louis Cardinals in St. Louis.
Gonzalez will take the rotation spot formerly occupied by Sean O'Sullivan. Sullivan was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with knee tendinitis. Dustin McGowan started on Thursday, but is not stretched out enough to start. McGowan gave the Phillies three scoreless innings before unraveling in the fourth inning.
Gonzalez has made three starts at AAA Lehigh Valley in the early going. Gonzalez is 1-1 with a 3.57 earned run average. Two of Gonzalez's starts were six or more innings with just one earned run allowed. In Gonzalez's loss to Pawtucket, he surrendered ten his and five earned runs in five innings work.
Gonzalez made one start in Major League camp in Spring Training against the Atlanta Braves, pitching three scoreless innings.
