It wouldn't be a Sixers offseason without some rookie injury news, right? Luckily this isn't a bone break or a mysterious shoulder issue, but nonetheless, one of the team's first-rounders will be sidelined for the near future. No. 26 overall pick Landry Shamet came down on someone's foot while fighting for a rebound during Friday's Summer League opener against Boston. He limped off the court to the locker room and was diagnosed with a sprained right ankle. Shamet will be held out for the rest of Summer League play and will be re-evaluated in three weeks. X-rays came back negative.
"Just a loose ball on the rebound, four guys converged there and I think I came down on somebody's foot, kind of tweaked my ankle a little bit," Shamet told reporters. "Training staff looked at it, addressed it and thought it was smart to hold me out, no need to push through anything right now and potentially jeopardize my future or anything like that. So they've been taking care of me, analyzing me."
The former Wichita State product looked good in the minutes he did play, showing range from beyond the arc and strong defense as well. Shamet told reporters that he will, without a question, be ready for the start of the season.
The Sixers continue Summer League play on Monday night against the Wizards with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. EST.
