The Eagles are already thin at safety and have a backup corner, rookie Avonte Maddox, filling in. That strategy will be tested with the Sidney Jones injury. Following the injury, Maddox moved into the slot while Rasul Douglas, who has never played the position, filled in at safety. When asked about the status of Sidney Jones on Friday, Doug Pederson said:
“He’s another one who we will continue to evaluate, probably more of a week-to-week guy.”
Week-to-week is not good in Pederson’s language. Examples of other players that have been week-to-week are Corey Clement (missed two games), Haloti Ngata (missed two games), Alshon Jeffery (missed three weeks) and Darren Sproles (missed five weeks). Pederson using that term essentially means that Jones will be out for at least one game and will likely miss more than that.
Jones was doing really well in the slot for the Eagles. In addition to testing the skill of Rasul Douglas and Avonte Maddox, the Ealges will be without much backup at corner or safety. This could prove to be an issue should any more injuries occur. Chandon Sullivan is the only cornerback on the practice squad. After signing Tre Sullivan to the 53-man roster prior to Thursday night’s tilt against the Giants, there are no safeties on the practice squad. There is still an open spot on the practice squad, however. The Eagles may also be more likely to make a move for a corner or safety with the news on Jones and Jalen Mills being shaken up on Thursday night.
