David West caught the inbound pass down by one, tried to inch closer to the basket and ran into Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. As the clock was set to expire, West threw up about a 13-foot jumper and as it missed the cylinder, the Wells Fargo Center erupted in cheers. Philadelphia had their second win in as many nights.
Michael Carter-Williams’ game-winning lay-up with less than 10 seconds to go put the Sixers in position to claim their seventh victory of the season with a 93-92 win at the Wells Fargo Center—their second win there this week and third on the week overall. His lay-up was in response to a made West jumper just seconds before the play, and turned the game around into a Sixers’ lead.
It was all part of a thrilling fourth quarter, again for the second time this week. The Sixers actually built up an 8-point lead with about eight minutes remaining, but struggled to maintain it as they missed nine consecutive shots. But when Indiana got within one by scoring 11 of the next 14 points, Nerlens Noel completed a three-point play to make it 87-83. Five unanswered from Indian put them back up, and it was back-and-forth down the stretch.
A big play in the game’s final minutes was a running hook off the back board made by Robert Covington to give the Sixers a lead with 32 seconds left, which set the stage for the West jumper. Covington actually had a shot blocked by West on the next possession, but the Sixers kept the ball and Carter-Williams slipped one just under Roy Hibbert’s arm for the lead.
“I saw some daytlight and went underneath [Hibbert] and got it off,” the reigning Rookie of the Year told Sixers writer Tom Moore.
It capped off one of the best weeks in recent history for the team, the fans and the Wells Fargo Center (including Flyers games). The players haven noticed how much more pleasant of an atmosphere it is when they win.
“This Wells Fargo Center is insane,” Wroten said, again via Moore. “We had a lot of fun.”
“We just play hard and use our pieces. If feels good [winning two straight games].”
