PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia 76ers have requested waivers on 17-year veteran forward Elton Brand on Sunday, according to a team press release.
The move came three days after the Brand announced his intent to retire following the team's preseason finale Friday evening against the Miami Heat.
“After 17 years of playing the game that I love, and it’s been great to me, I am officially retiring,” Brand said. “It’s been a privilege to play this game, and I’m certainly going to miss it. It’s definitely time now, after heavy consideration with coach [Brett Brown], with management, with [agent] David Falk, and of course my wife, Shahara, has been through this whole journey with me. It’s time.”
Brand was a two-time All-Star, 2000 Co-Rookie of the Year, 2006 Sportsmanship Award recipient and a member of the 2006 All-NBA Second Team. Through 1,058 career games, he averaged 33 minutes, 8.5 rebounds and 15.9 points per contest.
During his career, Brand played with five different teams: Chicago Bulls (1999-2001), Los Angeles Clippers (2001-2008), Sixers (2008-2012, 2016), Dallas Mavericks (2012-2013) and Atlanta Hawks (2013-2015).
