On Sunday night, the scoreboard may have shown a loss, but it was really a win for the Philadelphia 76ers, who got to see No.1 overall pick Ben Simmons shoot the ball well for the first time in Summer League action. After making just seven shots over the first three games of the Summer League, Simmons went 7-for-13 from the floor against the Chicago Bulls on Sunday.
"I made it a point that I was going to come out and shoot jumpers," Simmons said during his post-game interview with ESPN. "I did that, I think I was stepping out of my comfort zone, but that's how you grow and I definitely feel like I did that this game. I think I shot it pretty well overall, I had a few misses and that happens."
During the first three games of the Summer Leagues, fans, coaches and front office members of the Sixers got a glimpse of the LSU's products' superior court vision and unselfishness. He dished out 19 assists over the first three contests, but had only two on Sunday night, where his shot was the focus of his game.
It wasn't until 2:35 remaining in the first half that Simmons' hit his first jumper, and from there, things became more comfortable.
"It doesn't matter if you miss, as long as you're taking the shots and you're working at it. I did that tonight and I felt very comfortable. As soon as they started to drop, I felt good."
Philadelphia has a night off on Monday before facing the Golden State Warriors in their Las Vegas Summer League finale on Tuesday night at 8:30 p.m. As for what we can expect from Simmons? More shooting.
"Shooting jump shots and you know, working on everything. I think I'm coming out here and testing the waters a little bit, changing my game and adjusting to the NBA level."
Through four games, Simmons is averaging 10.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists in Summer League play.
