Joel Embiid is a very precious asset for the Philadelphia 76ers, as his high potential has the ability to perhaps launch the Sixers up the standings in future seasons. They are treating him just like that–precious, as he recovers from the stress fracture he suffered in his right foot from last spring.
As we noted last week, General Manager Sam Hinkie announced that Embiid’s right foot has experienced “less healing than anticipated”. That’s not necessarily a sign that it will not heal, just that it is not progressing as well as they hoped.
To get the most clear picture of what they are dealing with in the foot, as well as the best course of action, they are bringing in a “Dream Team” of doctors–three to be exact–to look at the Cameroonian seven-footer, according to Scott O’Neil.
“We’re still waiting, O’Neil told Breakfast on Broad. “We have another three doctors to come see him. The nice thing about jobs like these [is] you can literally get the best experts in the world. All you have to do is call and they love to see us.”
In the meantime, however, they have shut him down–something O’Neil confirmed himself in the same interview. He also admitted that they could get an answer on Embiid and his future in “a couple of weeks.” That, coupled with him being shutdown, puts his Summer League status in serious jeopardy, if not all but seal his fate as unavailable.
The Utah Summer League begins July 6 and the Vegas League starts July 11. The team had initially said in April that he would play in it.
