The Sixers today waived recently acquired swingman Gerald Wallace. Wallace was acquired from the Warriors back on July 27th along with cash considerations for Jason Thompson (also acquired this summer in the bank-heist trade with the Kings).
This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, as Gerald Wallace has been pretty much worthless for a couple of years now and might also own the league's worst contract. The Sixers will still be on the hook for $10.1 million for the final year of his contract, but given our general cap situation and the increasing likelihood that this season is going to be another tankathon, what difference does it really make? The days of paying out the differential between our roster and the salary floor to the rest of the squad are gone.
Wallace's albatross of a contract almost made it seem like he was destined at some point to end up on the Sixers, currently the premier destination for unwanted contracts if you're willing to pay a little fee for our troubles. Now that fate has done it's job, we are all free to move on.
Just to end on a positive note with GWallace, remember when he was snagged from the Kings in the Bobcats expansion draft and actually turned out to be not terrible? While his glory days are long gone, they were pretty sweet when they lasted. In the '07-08 season Dude averaged ~20 points per game along with 6 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2 steals and 1 block. That's pretty incredible. Wallace definitely won me an early fantasy basketball playoff round at some point (before likely losing me a championship).
Anyways, safe travels GWallace. We knew ye all too well …
