Something had to give. A historically "slow-starter", as Phillies General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. called him, Chad Durbin continued to consistently allow baserunners and runs. After last night's 9-2 loss to Boston in which Durbin gave up four hits and three runs in just an inning's work, his ERA was 9.00 after 16 appearances. Today the Phillies released Chad Durbin.
Durbin was an integral part of the 2008 Phillies World Championship team, with most of his success coming from alleviating jams created by the team's starters. This season, he could not strand inherited runners on base and could not get his own batters out. Unfortunately 2008 sentimentality does not make for 2013 wins.
Joe Savery has been recalled from AAA Lehigh Valley to take Durbin's roster spot.
