This Thursday night the Eagles will host the Miami Dolphins at Lincoln Financial Field, but they will get a chance to get up close and personal with the Dolphins before Thursday's tilt.
The Dolphins will come to the Nova Care Complex on Monday and Tuesday for joint practices with the Eagles ahead of the preseason dress rehearsal.
While the two teams will likely not show their hand too much in practice, the two days are sure to be full of physicality and verbal assaults, as has been commonplace across the league.
So far, the Los Angeles Rams and the Los Angeles Chargers (that'll take getting used to) engaged in joint practices that resulted in a team-wide brawl and the joint practices between the the San Francisco 49ers and Denver Broncos also saw fights break out.
There is already some tension brewing between the Dolphins and Eagles after new Dolphins' quarterback Jay Cutler claimed that the Dolphins' young receiver DeVante Parker is a speedier version of Alshon Jeffery, who the eagles signed this offseason.
Jeffery had elite seasons with Cutler as his quarterback and Adam Gase, now the Dolphins' head coach, running the offense for the Chicago Bears.
When asked about the comment, Jeffery opted to take the dignified route. "Whatever Jay says…as long as he's making plays and catching the ball that's all that matters," said Jeffery.
It will be interesting to compare the two now that will spend the next two days on the same field.
Jeffery and Cutler are not the only players who will be reacquainted this week.
Two players who will not need directions around the city are Byron Maxwell and Kiko Alonso who are both members of the Dolphins after they were traded as part of the package that ultimately landed Carson Wentz for the Eagles.
"I am, I’m looking forward to it," said Maxwell about returning to Philly. "…I would like to think they messed up."
Maxwell did not play nearly as bad as he did in his one year in Philadelphia, but he was still a far cry from the 6-year $63 million deal that Chip Kelly threw at him three years ago.
Eagles' first round pick Derek Barnett will also be seeing a familiar face.
Laremy Tunsil is playing tackle for the Dolphins and will get to face Barnett once again after clashed back in their SEC days.
Tunsil played at Ole Miss while Barnett played with Tennessee. When the Rebels clashed with the Volunteers in Barnett's freshman year, Barnett manhandled Tunsil, recording two sacks and four tackles for loss.
Barnett leads all players in preseason play with three sacks.
Doug Pederson has expressed that he intends to get Barnett some more first team reps in practice, and if history is any indicator Barnett will perform well against Tunsil and the Dolphins' offensive line.
The joint practices will allow both the offense and the defense to try their plays out on a new group of players and test themselves against a group that they are not familiar with, however we will have to wait until Thursday night to see which team will have more success.
