Surgery Awaits Cliff Lee if Elbow Doesn’t Improve

As the Phillies began to play the Tigers this afternoon, Ruben Amaro Jr. updated the media on the status of Cliff Lee and it definitely isn't good news.

Lee experienced soreness after throwing a bullpen session last week and imaging revealed a tendon tear in his elbow. Though his surgery wouldn't be Tommy John, recovery time for the 36-year-old would be 6-8 months.

ESPN baseball analyst Jayson Stark tweeted that the Phillies are not terribly optimistic about Lee's situation moving forward.

With Lee's condition deteriorating, Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez could be in the picture this season as a starter. He served up a two-run homer in the first inning on Tuesday against the Tigers.
