A quick update on Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz. On Friday, we learned that Carlos Ruiz was hit by a pitch in extended Spring Training down in Clearwater. It was not really news, because he had an x-ray and the results were good news as the x-ray showed no break.
However, Ruiz must be in continued pain that they are going to give him another x-ray today. This would be a tough break for the Phillies since the team has had little production from the catcher position (despite Erik Kratz's three-run home run last night). Plus, Phillies pitchers undoubtedly miss the comfort of their catcher. The Phillies currently have the worst ERA in the National League.
If Ruiz is okay to play, he can make a "rehab" assignment this week to get ready for game action. The Phillies have played 19 games thus far, making the last game of Ruiz's 25-game suspension Saturday.
