The Boston Bruins swept out the Carolina Hurricanes in four games to reach their third Stanley Cup Final in the last nine seasons. The St. Louis Blues defeated the San Jose Sharks in six games, reaching the Final for the first time since 1970.

Last week, it was already known that the President’s Trophy winners, the Tampa Bay Lightning, were eliminated, as were the Pittsburgh Penguins. Six other teams have joined, and many of them were near the top of the regular-season standings.

In total, eight goals were scored in the first period between the two teams, including seven in the first 9:41 of the game, as the Flyers fell into a 5-2 deficit by the midpoint of the first period on the way to a 7-3 defeat to the Blues on Thursday night.

There are just two games left on the Flyers schedule, including one final game away from home which the Flyers will play on Thursday against the St. Louis Blues.

The Flyers opponent on Monday is another team that has had a disappointing season. The St. Louis Blues are tied with the Flyers at 36 points, but with two fewer games played this season, sit one position ahead of the Flyers in the league standings. Both teams are just one point out of the NHL’s basement.

Six years ago, then Flyers GM Paul Holmgren made a trade that is widely regarded as the worst in franchise history when he sent James van Riemsdyk to Toronto for Luke Schenn. The Flyers president is among the many in Flyers management excited to have JVR back in Orange and Black.

At the time, the Flyers trade of Brayden Schenn to St. Louis for two draft picks and Jori Lehtera may have not made much sense, but now it seems like the trade shows clear paths for both sides. Nearly seven months after the trade was made, both teams from the trade should be more than happy with what they got in return.

The Philadelphia Flyers face the end of another disappointing season. It’s become a regular notion with the team’s current core of players. Now they must be held accountable.
