On Monday, the Flyers open rookie camp and Phil Myers is among the participants. But for him, rookie camp and the subsequent training camp to follow will take on a new meaning with a possible roster spot on the line.

Flyers defenseman Andrew MacDonald suffered a lower-body injury during an offseason workout and will be out for six weeks, according to GM Ron Hextall.

For the Flyers, the conversation seemingly grows every year with more and more prospects nearing the NHL level. That is no different this season, as training camp will feature a number of prospects vying for the chance to make the NHL roster. Here are five prospects to watch throughout training camp.

Ron Hextall’s goal from the day he took over as GM has been to build the Flyers into a Stanley Cup contender. With the roster where it is now, how close are the Flyers to being a true contender?

With the Flyers offseason plan essentially complete — with the exception of training camp happenings — have the Flyers done enough to show improvement in key areas from a season ago?

Shayne Gostisbehere was ranked as one of NHL Network’s Top 20 Defensemen right now, while Ivan Provorov was considered one of five defensemen on the bubble, sparking a bit of a debate showing how much Flyers fans value the 2015 first-round pick.

Robert Hagg is just one of the many defensemen who started in the Flyers system as a draft pick that has worked his way to the NHL and the Flyers present. As the team prepares for the 2018-19 season, the Flyers future on the blue line has started to become the present.

Both Ivan Provorov, and Shayne Gostisbehere are sharp defensemen but this isn’t the first time that the Philadelphia Flyers have seen this type of dynamic duo on defense.
