The Flyers road trip only gets tougher as they go through the gauntlet of Central Division teams all in playoff position. That begins on Thursday night against the St. Louis Blues, a team slipping a bit with a 3-4-3 record in the month of March.

The Flyers road losing streak continued on Tuesday night and reached 13 games, as they got off to a slow start in the first period. Their attempt at a comeback came up short in a 6-3 loss to the Detroit Red Wings.

The final 20 games for the Flyers begin with the start of a five-game road trip in Detroit as the Flyers take on the Red Wings on Tuesday night.

As the trade deadline passes and the Flyers open up a few roster spots, it presents more of an opportunity for younger players to get more of a look at increased roles in the NHL. GM Chuck Fletcher used Sunday’s game as an example of what he hopes to see for the rest of the season, “energy, hard work, young players playing a bigger role and getting an opportunity to show what they can do for next year.”

The guys discuss Claude Giroux’s 1,000th NHL and the Flyers trading the captain to the Florida Panthers two days prior to the deadline. They also look at deadline day deals for Justin Braun and Derick Brassard, as well as break down the team going forward with the addition of Owen Tippett.

Claude Giroux was introduced as a member of the Florida Panthers on Monday, his choice team and reportedly the only team he would waive his no-movement clause for a trade to take place. “Those details are going to stay private with Chuck Fletcher, but Florida was top of my list,” Giroux said.

The Flyers moved Justin Braun at the trade deadline to the New York Rangers for a 2023 third-round pick. So was Derick Brassard, who heads to the Edmonton Oilers for a 2023 fourth-round pick.

The 2022 NHL Trade Deadline is just a few hours away, and with the Flyers trading their longtime captain on Saturday, what will they do on Monday?

It’s not about whether Owen Tippett has the ability in him. That’s what got him drafted 10th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft. It’s about if he can consistently have noticeable performances like the one in his Flyers debut on Sunday, especially if the opportunity for ice time and an increased role is there. 

“We signed Claude eight years ago to a lengthy, superstar type of contract, which he earned, and as part of that contract he had a no move clause and he earned that right to decide, to have a big say in where he would go, I think is the best way to put it,” Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher said. “I did have a very limited market in terms of the teams I could speak with.”

The only Flyer who needed to find the back of the net was Kevin Hayes. Hayes scored twice in the second period, including a power-play goal with 5:05 remaining. That proved to be the game-winner through the third period, as the Flyers claimed a 2-1 win over the Islanders.

One day after trading Claude Giroux to Florida, it could be the final game for several other Flyers players, as the team plays the final game before the trade deadline on Sunday afternoon against the New York Islanders.

In the end, Giroux ultimately held the keys to his destination. Florida was where he wanted to be. That left the Flyers limited in what they could get in return. If nothing else, the return in the Giroux deal is more of a reality of what the state of the Flyers is and remains after this trade, and the result of years of shortcomings by the organization.

The Flyers have traded Giroux, forwards Connor Bunnaman and German Rubtsov, and a 2024 fifth-round pick to the Florida Panthers for forward Owen Tippett, a 2024 first-round pick and a 2023 third-round pick. The Flyers are also retaining half of Giroux’s salary.

A power-play goal and empty-netter proved to be the difference in the Flyers 3-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Friday night.

Giroux took his lap around the Wells Fargo Center ice, waved to the crowd, and darted off the ice, only to return for a curtain call, another final lap around as he was named first star of the game, and exited up the tunnel. His teammates all lined up to hug him. The emotion started to show. This felt like the end of an era.

Claude Giroux has appeared in every game since Jan. 13 and will take the ice for his 1,000th game in the NHL and in a Flyers uniform on Thursday night against the Nashville Predators. Prior to the game, the Flyers will hold a ceremony to honor Giroux’s milestone.

With just one week until the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline arrives, the question remains the same: where will Claude Giroux end up?

The guys are back and the Flyers have made their first roster move ahead of the trade deadline. Rasmus Ristolainen has been re-signed to a five-year, $25.5 million extension. The guys discuss their thoughts on the deal and what it means for the Flyers, as well as look ahead to the trade deadline and Claude Giroux’s 1,000th game.

In career game No. 999 on Sunday night, Giroux reached another milestone. A goal in the second period was his 900th career point. At the time, it put the Flyers in the lead of a game they went on to allowing the tying goal in the final minute of regulation and fall to the Montreal Canadiens, 4-3, in overtime at Wells Fargo Center.

Just over 24 hours after completing a 3-1 loss in Carolina to close out a two-game trip, the Flyers go from facing two of the top three teams in the league to the league’s worst team, the Montreal Canadiens. 

As has happened many times before, the Carolina Hurricanes got the last laugh, as Jordan Martinook scored on a deflection with 3:50 remaining in the third for the game-winning goal in a 3-1 loss for the Flyers on Saturday afternoon.

The road doesn’t get any easier as the Flyers face another team ranked in the top three in the league. The Carolina Hurricanes await for a Saturday afternoon matinee.

The Flyers extension of Rasmus Ristolainen makes for a confusing message and sense of direction, just as the trade deadline starts to approach and a time to set the foundation for change draws near.

A strong second period with three goals for the Flyers made it a one-goal game again, but the Panthers closed out strong to secure a 6-3 decision over the Flyers on Thursday night. 

The Flyers have a chance to get their second three-game winning streak on Thursday night when they take on the Florida Panthers, but the task will certainly not be easy. The Panthers enter the night in a tie for second in the NHL and first in the Eastern Conference with Carolina at 83 points.
