The Capitals didn’t win Thursday’s game with their stars, but their depth, getting good goaltending when they needed it and players to step up. For the Flyers, it was a reminder that a young defense can still pay the price for costly mistakes and that the depth needs to improve.
Two goals in 65 seconds put the Capitals in control in a 5-2 win against the Flyers on Thursday night at Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers did what they had to against the Ottawa Senators. After falling behind in the first period, they stayed the course, got their legs, took the lead in the second and handled business against the NHL’s worst team this season in a 3-2 win.
The Senators made things interested with a late goal, but the Flyers held on for a 3-2 win. Coupled with Columbus’ 2-0 loss to the Islanders, the Flyers moved to within three points of a playoff spot with the win.
The Flyers didn’t get much help in the playoff race, but did close the margin to five points with another convincing win over the Islanders, and the margin will remain until the team takes the ice again on Monday night.
The Flyers closed out the first period with a pair of goals and scored three goals on five shots in the second to pull away in a 5-2 win over the New York Islanders on Saturday night.
The Capitals scored twice in the first period and added three quick goals in the second to put the game away early and held off the Flyers comeback in a 5-3 win on Wednesday night at Wells Fargo Center.
The Flyers didn’t carry the play for most of the night, but took advantage of the opportunities they had to keep hanging around in the playoff picture with a 4-1 win over the Islanders.
Two goals in the first and two more in the second paced the Flyers to a 4-1 win over the Islanders on Sunday afternoon.
The Flyers won in overtime, 6-5. In the end, it doesn’t matter how the points come, as long as they keep coming. But against the lowly Red Wings, this was a game that the Flyers needed to lock down and didn’t do it. Sure, they survived, but it sets the stage for a difficult game to come on Sunday in the back end of a home-and-home.
