Flyers training camp opened on Thursday with John Tortorella’s skating gauntlet, setting the tone for the weeks ahead. Roster spots are available, providing open competition for several players.

Before Flyers fans even get a chance to see what a John Tortorella camp looks like or how the team will respond, they got a taste of the new bench boss’s no-nonsense approach. It’s very clear that each of the 71 players on the training camp roster are now on Tortorella time.

The message at the start of Flyers training camp is that the team has “something to prove,” words written on t-shirts worn by Alain Vigneault and several players. That message rang loud and clear as the team gets to work in training camp.

A total of 58 players will take part in training camp, which opens on Thursday morning with the first on-ice sessions. There will be 33 forwards, 20 defensemen, and five goaltenders in attendance. Full roster and schedule here.

Main training camp is right around the corner as well, starting on Thursday, Sept. 23, in preparation for the upcoming season.

The final tuneup for the Flyers before the official start of the regular season came on Sunday night when two rosters skated in a 60-minute scrimmage followed by a shootout at Wells Fargo Center.

One of the subjects that was discussed a lot during the playoff run over the summer was the lack of success for the Flyers power play. That was an area of focus during training camp on Friday, as the team returned to the ice after an off day on Thursday.

In these unknown times, one thing has not changed for the Flyers. There are expectations this year, higher than they have been in quite some time. After making a playoff run this summer that came one win short of a conference final appearance, there is no turning back for the franchise. The goal is not just about playoffs, it is about making another run.

On the first day of Flyers training camp, it didn’t take long to notice the two players whose presence stood out the most. Nolan Patrick was back on the ice as a regular member of the rotation, as was Oskar Lindblom.

The guys take a closer look at the 2020-21 season schedule and the training camp roster, including Sam Morin’s move to left wing and some of the bubble players that could be contributors this season. They also update the World Junior Championships where Team USA and Flyers prospects Cam York and Bobby Brink continue their quest for gold. 

According to a report from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet Canada, the NHL and NHLPA have a tentative agreement on a 56-game season. TSN’s Renaud Lavoie adds that an announcement could come in the next few days with the 2020-21 season beginning on Jan. 13.

When Jake Voracek was absent from the Flyers scrimmage on Saturday, the first thought is that there could be a positive COVID-19 test in Flyers camp. But that was quickly put to rest when Voracek was back on the ice on Sunday for the next practice.

Moments before the team took the ice for the scrimmage on Saturday, GM Chuck Fletcher announced that Jake Voracek was “unable to participate.” According to the NHL’s protocol, that is the only update teams are able to give on absent players. So there is no knowledge if Voracek’s absence is injury-related, illness-related or simply a maintenance issue.

The overall turnaround for the Flyers has earned Alain Vigneault a Jack Adams nomination as one of three finalists for the award given to the coach of the year. For Vigneault, this one is special for a specific reason.

As Phase 3 of the NHL’s return-to-play plan begin, the Flyers unveiled their roster for training camp on Monday morning.

Phase 3 of the NHL’s return-to-play plan is scheduled to begin on July 10, the earliest possible date based on previous updates. The league will only move to Phase 3 on this date provided that medical and safety conditions allow it.

The 76ers announced the dates of the Blue X White Scrimmage, Media Day and training camp on Monday afternoon.

In total, 64 players will participate in Flyers training camp — 34 forwards, 22 defensemen and seven goalies. Training camp will run from Sept. 13 with regular on-ice sessions through Sept. 19. Following an off day on Sept. 20, the team will be back on the ice for sessions from Sept. 21 through Sept. 26.
