Teheran, Hamels square off for final start of Spring Training

Opening Day is right around the corner, and the Phillies have just a couple of games left at home, down in Clearwater, before heading back to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia for exhibition baseball against the Pittsburgh Pirates in what is called the On-Deck Series.

Today is the first of those two remaining Grapefruit League games at Bright House Field, which has a first pitch scheduled for 1:05 pm EST.

A handful of moves were made by the club Wednesday morning, as the team progresses in making final cuts in preparation for Opening Day next Monday against the Boston Red Sox. Outfielder Brian Bogusevic was reassigned to minor league camp, despite batting .306 with three home runs and eight runs batted in during Spring Training. Additionally, right handers Phillippe Aumont and Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez were outrighted off of the 40-man roster to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Starting Pitching Matchup:

Atlanta Braves (13-15)

Philadelphia Phillies (11-16)

RHP

Julio Teheran

(2-1, 5.79 ERA)

LHP

Cole Hamels

(0-1, 5.17 ERA)

With just five days remaining until Opening Day, the Phillies and Braves will send their staff aces to the mound this afternoon for their last start of Spring Training.

Hamels, 31, has been somewhat shaky this spring in five outings. In 15.2 innings, he has allowed nine earned runs over 16 hits and seven walks.  He has struck out 14 batters, however, which may suggest he has been working on his command or pitching mechanics in games.

Teheran, 24, has had similar woes down in Florida for 2015 Grapefruit League action. In four starts, 14 innings pitched, he has surrendered 11 runs, nine earned, over 18 hits and eight walks. While Hamels has given up four home runs, Teheran has allowed just one.
