After 15 seasons, the Camden Riversharks are officially leaving town. With plenty of rumors around that the Atlantic League team could move to Connecticut, the final verdict is in.
The team released the following statement on their website:
The Camden Riversharks announced today that the club will cease operations immediately due to the inability to reach an agreement on lease terms with the ballpark's owner, the Camden County Improvement Authority ("CCIA").
Campbell's Field has been home since inception in 2001, and the ballpark has twice been named Baseball America's Ballpark of the Year. Over 3.5 million fans have attended Riversharks games over the past 15 years.
We would like to thank our partners and fans for supporting the club for 15 memorable seasons. We did everything we could to keep affordable, family entertainment alive and well in Camden.
The team is discounting merchandise for sale this weekend at the Campbell's Field.
What is unclear is what direction Camden will go with the ballpark. The Camden County Improvement Authority ended up in possession of the ballpark after the previous owner defaulted on their loans. While an affiliated minor league team would be nice (the Phillies short-season affiliate Williamsport Crosscutters would be great!), there has been nothing yet linked to Camden and Campbell's Field.
