Dainius Zubrus scored the winning goal at the 12:47 mark of the third period with a snap shot that beat Flyers goaltender Steve Mason, to give the New Jersey Devils a 6-4 win in the home opener for the Flyers.
Michael Ryder opened the scoring for the Devils in the first period. Ryder also contributed two assists. Mike Cammalleri scored twice for New Jersey, while Adam Henrique and Patrick Elias also tallied their first goals of the season for the Devils. New Jersey goalkeeper Cory Schneider stopped 35 of 39 Flyer shots.
Wayne Simmonds led the Flyers with two goals, including one on the power play. Claude Giroux also scored on the power play and Vinny Lecavalier scored his first of the season in the third period. Mark Streit recorded two assists while Jakub Voracek, Matt Read, Andrew MacDonald, Giroux, Simmonds, and Lecavalier each recorded one. Steve Mason stopped 20-25 as he took the loss for the second straight night.
Ryder opened the scoring for the Devils, as he took a drop pass from Ryan Clowe, and beat Mason glove side through a screen. Andy Greene also recorded his first assist of the season.
Philadelphia would quickly fall behind 3-0 just 5:33 into the second period as Henrique and Cammalleri both scored. On Cammalleri's goal, a tip-in from a Jaromir Jagr shot, Jagr moved into sixth place on the NHL's all-time scoring list.
The Flyers would fight back, potting their first goal on the power play from the Captain, at the 15:44 mark of the second period. Following Giroux's goal, the Flyers, more specifically Wayne Simmonds, would take over.
With under one minute to play in the second period, Simmonds would score twice, once on a snap shot and then a buzzer beater on a redirected shot from Lecavalier.
Despite having the momentum entering the third period, New Jersey struck first in the final frame, as Elias tapped in a goal from a beautiful feed from Marek Zidlicky. Just fifteen seconds later, Lecavalier would tie the game for the Flyers at 4-4.
The Flyers let up the ultimate game-winning goal to Zubrus just 25 seconds after killing off a New Jersey power play.
