Steve Berthiaume of ESPN has a different take on the Joe West interference call. In a nut shell, once instant replay is opened to see if a ball is a home run, that opens up all possibilities.
Berthiaume tweeted:
Former MLB ump Jim McKean tells me: on that play, umps CAN use replay to determine if ball was a home run. Once umps see play, they CAN use judgement call to determine fan interference, which is then NOT subject to protest… They review to determine if HR/2B call was correct. From there, its ump judgement call.
