In 2013 it was Mr. Sandman, Mariano Rivera; in 2014 it’s Derek Jeter. The Yankee’s Captain today announced that the 2014 season would be his last. In a letter to the fans on his official Facebook page he explained that the 2013 season was rough with all his injuries. He also explained the last 20 years he was focused on winning and being the best he could be, but its time for the next chapter.

Jeter’s lifetime numbers up to this season are 19 seasons; .312/.381/.446 with 256 career home runs, 3316 hits, and 348 stolen bases. Jeter also has five World Series rings, World Series MVP, 13 All stars appearances, five Silver Sluggers, five Gold Gloves, and a Rookie of the Year.

As Jeter finishes his Hall of Fame career, this writer believes that the League will say goodbye to the Yankees' captain in a similar manner as Mariano Rivera. It will be interesting to follow how clubs say goodbye, who is the next Yankee captain, and who will replace Jeter in 2015.
