The Flyers blanked the visiting Atlanta Thrashers, 4-0, in which goaltender Martin Biron recorded his first shutout as a Flyer.
Three first-period goals set the tone for the game as the Flyers jumped out to an early lead at 1:21 on a goal by Mike Richards. At 12:56, Jeff Carter got into the act followed by a Sami Kapanen tally just 34 seconds later.
Although there were no goals in the second, the Flyers kept the pressure on Atlanta and their netminder Johan Hedberg, out-shooting them 14-10 in the middle period.
In the third, defenseman Randy Jones scored his first goal of the year at 8:09 to finish the scoring. The Flyers out shot the Thrashers, 33-31, for the game.
Biron would go on to play in 68 games for the Flyers in the 2007-08 season, tying Bernie Parent (1974-75) for the second-most games played for a Flyers netminder. Bernie’s 73 games in the 1973-74 season is still a Flyer record. Biron would go on to record four more shutouts while recording 30 victories and a 2.59 GAA that season.
Led by Biron and young stars Richards and Carter, the Flyers would reach the Eastern Conference Final that year. After series victories over the Capitals and Canadiens, the Flyers succumbed to Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins in five games.
