The Phillies Triple-A team started their season off 0-2 with losses to both the Blue Jays and the Pirates, but on Friday afternoon, they notched their first win of the season, 2-1, over Toronto.
For the second straight game, the team was led by former highly-touted catching prospect Tommy Joseph, who has dealt with various concussions throughout his minor league career, halting his development on numerous occasions. On Wednesday, Joseph went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and a run scored in the teams' loss to Pittsburgh. He followed that with a 3-for-3 day at the plate against Toronto on Friday in the 2-1 win.
Last season, he was limited to to 45 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley, hitting just .193. In a rehab stint with the GCL Phillies last season, Joseph hit .485 with three home runs and 10 RBI's. There isn't really a place for him behind the plate in the minors, with both Jorge Alfaro and Andrew Knapp manning the starting jobs at Reading and Lehigh Valley, so expect the Phillies to either try him at first base or start him off in Clearwater as a backstop once again. Joseph hit .274 with 10 home runs and 44 RBI's in 127 games with Double-A Reading in 2014
On the mound, the Phillies got strong showings from four pitchers. Anthony Vasquez tossed three innings and struck out three, Joely Rodriguez walked two and allowed no runs on two hits in two innings while David Buchanan and Tom Windle each contributed with a scoreless inning of their own.
