Training Camp Notebook: Kiko’s return, Chip Kelly quotes, more practice observations

The Philadelphia Eagles held their first practice since defeating the Indianapolis Colts by the score of 36-10 in week one of the preseason.

Today was a light practice for the Eagles, as they prepare to practice alongside the Baltimore Ravens tomorrow.

The team practiced with shorts on and no shoulder pads. Plus, practice was only about an hour long.

Prior to practice, Eagles' head coach Chip Kelly addressed the Philadelphia media.

Kelly announced that inside linebacker Kiko Alonso (concussion) will return to practice today, but the team will slowly get him back up to speed.

"We'll ease him back in there," Kelly said. "I'm not sure how much he's going to do. We'll get him out there running, doing some drills, maybe some 7-on-7. He should be fine by the end of the week."

Kelly gave his thoughts about the competition between quarterbacks Matt Barkley and Tim Tebow.

"I thought both of them played well, but I think in both of their (situations), there were a couple miscommunications where some things broke down and it wasn't their fault, so they have to make some adjustments from it, but they both–when they had time–threw the ball very well," he said. "(They) were very accurate with their throws. Matt got a little bit more throws than Timmy had just in terms of play-calling, but that wasn't by design, it was just about how the game was expressing itself, but I thought both of them took advantage of their opportunities."

Lastly, Kelly thinks that he has more depth at the offensive skill positions spots then he has ever had during his tenure in Philadelphia.

"…Our plan is to have more depth there so a guy doesn't have to play 60-70 snaps at one position, whether it be running back or receiver, but that was kind of our thoughts, to spread it around because we ask our guys to run so much, you need more bodies," Kelly said. "So barring injury, that's what we're looking forward to rotating a little bit more at the receiver spot because I think we have upgraded the bottom part of the receiver spot."

Here are a couple of notes from today's light workout:

  • Quarterback Sam Bradford was very mobile today. He was running multiple roll outs and spreading the ball around with accuracy.
  • Wide receiver Josh Huff continues to impress during camp. He caught two touchdown passes today.
  • Quarterback Mark Sanchez seemed to forget about his shaky start against the Colts. For the most part, he was hitting wide receivers right in the chest with the ball.
  • Offensive lineman Andrew Gardner took first team reps at right guard. It looks like the Eagles have found their starting right guard.
  • Running back DeMarco Murray was a full participant in today's workout.
  • Although DeMeco Ryans didn't practice today, he is expected to be on the practice field tomorrow.
  • Fletcher Cox showed that he is a true leader on this team. He helped newly acquired Eagle Alfy Hill get adjusted to the way that the Eagles' defensive line goes about their work.
  • Injury Report: Earl Wolff (knee), Ryans (rest) and Zach Ertz (core muscle).

The Eagles will practice with the Ravens during tomorrow's practice in Philadelphia.
