If you looked at Cloyd's AAA numbers on July 4, you might think he was about to be released. After a respectable run in the Major Leagues in which he went 2-2 with a 3.41 ERA, Cloyd fell off the face of the earth. After an Independence Day game against the Syracuse Chiefs, Cloyd was 1-8 with a 7.69 ERA. It seemed like the end of Tyler Cloyd, and the Phillies seemed to agree with that when Ethan Martin was summoned from AAA Lehigh Valley when Jonathan Pettibone went down with an injury.
The Phillies need a starter Tuesday night against the Colorado Rockies since John Lannan went down with an injury of his own. Tyler Cloyd will be getting the call, the Phillies announced. The good news is that Cloyd appears to have recovered from his 1-8 mess at AAA.
Since July 4, Cloyd is 4-1. Cloyd's only loss in that span was a complete game loss, an eight-inning start in which he gave up three earned runs. He followed that up with his second complete game in a row on Wednesday in which he allowed just one earned run for the win. In those seven starts Cloyd has allowed zero or one runs in every start but the three-run complete game loss.
With Jonathan Pettibone and Roy Halladay both making rehab starts on Tuesday, Cloyd's and Ethan Martin's chance in the rotation could end soon. But for now, they might as well see what they can do.
