Goddel, 23, was selected by the Phillies in the Rule-5 draft this year, a place where they had success in the past with Shane Victorino and most recently, Odubel Herrera. Overall this season, Goeddel is hitting .192 with four homers and 16 RBIs, but showed promise while playing regularly between May 5 and June 1, slashing .297/.350/.500.
In late August, Phillies skipper Pete Mackanin told reporters that he didn't see the point of playing Goeddel, despite him having more of a future with the organization than Jimmy Paredes and Peter Bourjos. Now, the team has both Aaron Altherr and Roman Quinn in the mix, making playing time for Goeddel even more tough to come by prior to his injury.
In September, Goeddel has started four games and pinch-hit in one, tallying three hits in 13 at-bats. He's likely to begin the 2017 season with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
