UPDATE: League sources have confirmed to Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News that Doug Pederson will become the Eagles head coach. The team can not announce the move until the Chiefs are eliminated from the playoffs.
Let's get you up to speed on a crazy day for coaching developments in the NFL.
The Eagles were set to meet with Tom Coughlin on Thursday as reports surfaced that they were setting their sights on hiring the veteran head coach who spent the last 12 seasons on a rival sideline. Coughlin turned them down and withdrew from consideration.
Then, the coach the Eagles fired, Chip Kelly, was hired by the San Francisco 49ers.
With all of these developments, three names remain in the Eagles coaching search and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson has emerged as the top candidate for the Eagles head coaching job, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Eagles will pursue Pederson in the coming days, as an official hire can not be made until the Chiefs are eliminated from the playoffs. Kansas City faces the New England Patriots on Saturday.
Pederson was interviewed by the Eagles on Sunday and has a long history with the Eagles, both as a player and a coach under Andy Reid.
The other candidates remaining for the Eagles are current interim head coach Pat Shurmur and running back coach Duce Staley. It seems likely that either would have been offered or hired for the position by this time, given the lack of restrictions through other teams to make the move official.
Similarly, it seems hard to picture the Eagles trying to add candidates to the list. Pederson said the Eagles had paused the search, and with their focus shifting to Pederson, seem like it is only a matter of time before they make the move official.
