USA vs Switzerland Women’s Hockey: New Olympic Record in 9-0 Victory

In their second preliminary game of the Olympics, the U.S. women's Olympic hockey team set the new Olympic world record for the fastest five goals in a game in their overpowering 9-0 victory vs Switzerland on Monday.

Led by Amanda Kessel and Kendall Coyne's four points, two goals and two assists each, and two goals by teammate Monique Lamoureux, the United States bulldozed their way to a spot in next Monday's semifinal.

Goaltender Molly Schaus secured the shutout with 10 saves in net for the U.S.

The five goal first period kicked off on Lamoureux's first tally of the game, beating Swiss goaltender Florence Schelling five-hole from a behind the net pass by her twin sister Jocelyne at 9:20 of the first frame. A mere 47 seconds later, Brianna Decker added her first goal of the tournament on a rebound off Schelling to double the U.S. lead. Eight seconds after Decker's goal, Kessel took a wrister all alone from the slot to put the Americans up 3-0 in a 55 second span.

Hilary Knight potted her second goal in as many games with 5:37 to go in the first after she tucked home the puck under Schelling and in for the 4-0 lead. Kessel made it 5-0 on her second of the game at 15:42, one-timing Decker's pass on the power play to end a five goal run totaling 6:22 of the first, the new Olympic record.

Lamoureux's second came with 6:34 left in the middle frame on a shot from the bottom right circle in front of Schelling for the 6-0 lead.

Coynee notched two straight in the third, the first coming 47 seconds into the period after wacking away at Schelling until the puck leaked in over the goal line to put the U.S. up 7-0. The eighth goal of the contest and Coyne's second went five-hole on the Swiss goaltender 3:10 after the Illinois native's first goal.

Alex Carpenter completed the nine-goal rout on a breakaway tally with 4:11 left to end the game.

The United States put 53 shots on goal in the three period contest with 13 players adding at least one point on the stat sheet.

The biggest match of the preliminaries looms for the U.S. as the team is slated to take on the Canadians at 7:30 E.T. Wednesday morning. The match, which looks to be a preview of the gold medal game, will be broadcasted on NBCSN.
