The Phillies are coming off of a brutal loss, where a 10-inning performance from Cliff Lee was not enough.   The Phillies turn to Vance Worley, who last pitched in a very brutal game himself.  Worley gave up four runs in five innings.  The Phillies couldn't find a run for him.

The Phillies face the Padres' Joe Weiland, making only his second major league start.   Weiland made his major league debut on Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers and gave up six earned runs in five innings.  So, he sits 0-1 with a 10.91 ERA in his brief major league career.

The Phillies lineup is the one of the Pierre-Mayberry variety.  See my earlier post about how I feel the constant LF-1B turnstyle is hurting John Mayberry.   Carlos Ruiz catches Vance Worley for the first time this season, presumably for some offense that Brian Schneider does not usually provide.  Weiland is not a lefty, so they are not avoiding a lefty-lefty matchup that Schneider would provide.
