Final: Reds 11, Phillies 2
WP: Anthony DeSclafani (5-4, 3.53 ERA) LP: Aaron Harang (4-7, 3.04 ERA)
Cincinnati, OH – A game which took two hours and 50 minutes to play before a crowd of 27,993, the Philadelphia Phillies (22-38) lost for the fourth consecutive time at Great American Ball Park, against the Cincinnati Reds (26-31).
Phillies starter Aaron Harang struggled out of the gate in the bottom of the first inning. Throwing 31 pitches, he allowed four runs on two hits and two walks. Cincinnati's first hit came on a RBI-double by right fielder Jay Bruce. The latter of the two base-knocks was a three-run home run by shortstop Zack Cozart.
The next half inning, Philadelphia got themselves in the run column. Third baseman Maikel Franco doubled for the sixth time of the season to lead off the top of the second, which subsequently extended his hitting streak to eight games. Three batters later, having advanced to third base, Franco scored on a RBI-single from catcher Carlos Ruiz.
Harang allowed his second and third home runs of the night in the bottom of the third. First baseman Joey Votto and third baseman Todd Frazier crushed their 11th and 17th home runs of the season respectively to put the Reds up 6-1.
Two innings later in the bottom of the fifth, the Reds tacked-on another insurance run as Votto hit a solo shot for the second time of the game, and third time of his career against Harang. The right hander's four home runs allowed tonight tied a career high. He had allowed just four home runs over 12 starts prior this season.
The Phillies' first, real offensive threat of the night came in the top of the seventh as they trailed 7-1. With the bases loaded and one out, after Ruiz walked and pinch-hitter Darin Ruf and right fielder Ben Revere singled, Odubel Herrera hit a sacrifice-fly RBI to center field. The rally ended with the Phillies only scoring one run, however, as second baseman Chase Utley grounded out two pitches later.
It didn't take long for the Reds to answer back. With one runner on, Votto homored for the third time of the night to give his team a seven-run advantage. This was the third time in his career that he had three home runs in a game. According to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer, Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench is the only other Red in franchise history who has accomplished this feat.
Another run was able to score by the Reds in the bottom of the seventh after Herrera committed his third fielding error of the season. An inning later, Cincinnati brought home their 11th run of the game as center fielder Kristopher Negron singled-home left fielder Skip Schumaker for his second RBI of the season.
Despite getting 11 hits tonight, the Phillies' offense left 18 men on base, as opposed to the Reds leaving 15 on base with 13 hits total. Five of those 13 hits were home runs.
Losing by nine runs, tonight was the Phillies' most lopsided defeat against the Reds since May 18, 2013 when they were blanked 10-0.
