Last week, the Sixers waived JaVale McGee and had been searching for someone to fill his spot on the roster. Before the game against Atlanta tonight, the Sixers did just that by claiming Glenn Robinson III off waivers from the Timberwolves.
During his two seasons at Michigan, Robinson, 21, averaged 12 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. He was selected in the second round, 40th overall, by Minnesota, but was playing under five minutes a game. In limited action, the 6-foot-7 guard averaged 1.2 points and 0.6 rebounds in 25 games.
Sixers head coach Brett Brown tells Dei Lynam of CSNPhilly.com that he's eager to see what Robinson is capable of when he joins the team.
"We are excited to have him," Brown said before Saturday's game against the Hawks. "We liked him when we looked at him prior to the draft. Part of our plan is identifying young people who have a chance to be keepers. He ticks a lot of boxes in regards to it being a no-brainer in why we would be interested in him. Funny enough I coached his dad in San Antonio for a little while."
Robinson's dad, Glenn Robinson, played 11 NBA seasons, including one with the Sixers in 2003-04. Like KJ McDaniels, Robinson signed a one-year contract and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.
