This Eagles season seems to follow a traditional trend. The Eagles are 6-2 and a win is a win.
But many of these wins haven’t been pretty. Sunday was another example for the Eagles surviving mistakes and somehow coming out on top, this time against the Texans.
Here is this week’s report card.
Pass offense: It’s an interesting grade because the pass offense wasn’t horrible. Three interceptions are pretty bad obviously, but for the most part, Nick Foles was completing a majority of passes before his injury and Mark Sanchez filled in admirably for no real preparation with the first-team players. Jeremy Maclin once again had a killer game, this time in a winning effort, and Jordan Matthews made an excellent catch on his touchdown. B
Run offense: Once they really got going, the run offense played pretty well for the Eagles. Look no further than a four-play drive for 70 yards that was all runs, two by LeSean McCoy and two by Chris Polk. McCoy turned in another strong game all things considered, but it did start slow. B+
Pass defense: It continues to be the good going with the bad on this unit. The good: a continued pass rush that creates many opportunities for sacks, and there were also four more of those for the Eagles defense. The bad: some really poor coverages and the fact that Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher still don’t know how to turn their heads on back-shoulder passes. B-
Run defense: Arian Foster didn’t get much going. It is the Eagles linebackers who continued to be a brick wall to opposing running backs. The pass defense has its struggles, but there is nothing wrong against the run. This team knows how to defend it and defend it well. A
Special teams: Surprising a bit of an off game for the special teams unit. No major returns, no notable punts or punt coverage. There was another 45-yard field goal from Cody Parkey but that’s about it. B+
Overall: It’s a game that had its flaws, but not nearly enough to knock the Eagles off in this game. When it counted, the Eagles got big plays and there is a lot to be said about overcoming key injuries. Playing without three starters by the end of the game is a pretty tough test. The Eagles passed, playing some of their best football following the injuries. B+
